NEW RIVER, WALKS 2019

Four river walks have been scheduled for 2019, three along the New River or its old course, and one covering a further section of the Lea Valley Walk. The walks are of varying distance & all start at about 10 am.

The creation of the New River was one of the greatest engineering and mapping works of its time. The New River Company was one of the first companies in the world and certainly the first in the UK. It was substantially financed by the King. It is one of the longest-lived companies to have existed, operationally for over 300 years and as a property company to this day. 29th September this year marks the 406th anniversary of the completion of the New River when, after more than 5 years work, it gently meandered and flowed for over 40 miles along the 100 foot contour, from springs near Hertford into the 'Round Pond', an old duck pond at the top of a hill in Islington, North London. From the Round Pond, water was distributed in hollowed-out elm pipes and by water carriers to those in the City Of London fortunate enough to be able to afford a fresh water supply. It was usually fed to the ground floor of dwellings. It wasn't a pressurised, constant supply, and water was only made available on notified days and times. However, the water was certainly cleaner, safer and much more convenient than that carried from the River Thames, local wells or conduits.

Today, after over 400 years, the New River is still supplying drinking water to London and, thanks to the New River Path, we can continue to enjoy walking much of this unique part of London’s industrial heritage.

There is no charge for our walks. John and Charles will explain various features of interest along the way, together with a bit of history. All walks include a lunch stop and short morning/afternoon breaks. Wear suitable clothing and footwear. Bring food and drink for lunch, or purchase locally at lunch stop locations where food and drink will be available.

Further details will be issued prior to the date of each walk. I do hope you can join us for at least one of them.
